Jeff Ryan loses battle of Glenbrook

I Tivo'd Saturday's high school basketball matchup between Duke-bound Jon Scheyer of Glenbrook North and Northwestern recruit Jeff Ryan of Glenbrook South.

Scheyer is the real deal and led North to a 57-46 victory over South.

Jeff Ryan also showed a few flashes of why Northwestern is excited by him. He has excellent size at 6-6 and a great handle on the ball with either hand.

Ryan defended Scheyer most of the game until he got in foul trouble. He did a respectable job considering how hard it is to guard Scheyer. Ryan showed decent quickness, but, more importantly, the kind of effort on defense that has been lacking at Northwestern.

Ryan also knocked down a three and a couple other outside shots. He has good range. Like a lot of high-schoolers, he needs to add some weight and muscle. However, he looks like he can step in pretty quickly and be a contributer at Northwestern.

Let's hope Carmody can find enough charm and charisma within himself to lure David Brooker from Moss Pt. Mississippi to Evanston. The kid is a typical Carmody skinny frontcourt recruit -- 6-7 or 6-8 and 200 or 215 depending on the source -- but he is listed as an honorable mention selection by Street & Smith magazine, which is step up from the likes of Carmody's usual signees of years past.
And all Cat fans know NU needs front court players desperately.
If Booker signs with NU, it will mean all four recruits made the Street & Smith preseason All-America list as high honorable mention (one) or honorable mention (three) and that would make this recruiting class Carmody's best ever (which is a very relative term considering what a lousy recruiter Carmody is).
With only six scholarship players returning to the team next year, Carmody needs to bring in four or five frosh to even run good practices and Booker would be as good a springtime signee as can be expected from this program right now.
The Cats will really struggle next year if these frosh play like Vince Scott did as a freshman. Let's hope Booker is attracted by the huge possibility of tons of playing time next year if he signs with NU and that these four newcomers can be at least as good as Craig Moore.
GO CATS!
