Lee has court date on Wednesday

Former Northwestern guard Brandon Lee faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of burglary and unlawful use of credit card charges, the Chicago Tribune reports. Lee was released from the Northwestern basketball program officially Thursday. He is due in court August 10th.

The Peoria Journal Star's Dave Reynolds talked to Lee's high school coaches, who were saddened by the chain of events. The Journal Star's Leslie Williams gave more details on the investigation that has implicated Lee and his girlfriend, Jessica McElroy.

The Good News: Jeff Ryan commits

ChicagoHoops.com reports that Glenbrook South's Jeff Ryan has committed to Northwestern.

We tip our cap to coach Bill Carmody and lead recruiter Paul Lee for what is shaping into an excellent recruiting class in a key (understatement) recruiting year.

The Bad News: Brandon Lee

The beat goes on for the beleaguered Brandon Lee ...

The Peoria Journal Star reports that Lee is being investigated for burglaries on the Northwestern campus. Lee was officially removed from the NU basketball team on Wednesday (August 3) and will not report back to the program.

Brandon and Gary Lee will not return to NU

Coach Bill Carmody announced that Brandon and Gary Lee will not return to the Northwestern basketball program this year.

We've never seen Gary Lee play due to him being academically ineligible this year, but Brandon showed a ton of promise in his play this year before injury and suspension. His loss is disappointing as he looked like the best freshman in last year's class.

Last year's freshmen class is now looking like a complete bust, unless Sterling Williams proves to be a major star. Carmody and company have a lot riding on him.

This also opens up two scholarships for the upcoming season. Could the Cats fill one of the two new spots with another European signing or will a walk-on like Jason Okrzesik take one of the scholarships? Here's betting that both happen.

Illinois Prep Bullseye reports Cats in hunt for Ryan

Illinois Prep Bullseye has reported a rumor that Northwestern could be on the verge of landing Jeff Ryan, a 6-6 guard from Glenbrook South High School in the Chicago suburbs.

Ryan is a strong shooter and would fit well into the Northwestern system. This would be a huge get for the NU program.

The except from the website:

It seems as though Northwestern has adopted a new recruiting strategy this summer--offering plenty of prospects scholarships early.  It is also quite apparent that the strategy is working, as the Wildcats have already mustered two commitments in the 2006 class-- 6'3 Jeremy Nash from Marist High School in Chicago and 6'8 Kevin Koble from Heritage Christian in Scottsdale, AZ.

With that being said, one of the hottest rumors that we heard while in Orlando was that Northwestern could be on the verge of its third commitment, as they are believed to be the leader for 6'6 Jeff Ryan from Glenbrook South High School in Glenview, IL.  Others in the running for Ryan include Stanford and St. Louis.  Ryan is a big guard who is a good spotup shooter and has also shown that he can put the ball on the floor.
