The Daily's season in review

The Daily Northwestern wrote its post-mortem on the Northwestern basketball season Thursday. As former Daily staffer (way, way back), it's good to see the negativity of the newsroom hasn't been lost.

Anthony Tao recaps the season -- and, let's not revisit it again, ok? -- with its suspensions, poor shooting and devastating losses to teams like Penn State.

Meanwhile, Sarah Rothschild presents a picture of disappointment in stating that coach Bill Carmody could be on the hot-seat if he doesn't take the Wildcats to the postseason soon.

The article by Rothschild makes some points, but presents a picture of Carmody as not having done enough to bring a NCAA berth to Evanston. Not to be snide, but no coach has ever done it at Northwestern, so it's hard to fault him.

Yes, it was a disappointing season without an NIT berth, but the idea of Sterling Williams and Bernard Cote entering the lineup this year is encourgaing. The loss of T.J. Parker may be a blessing in disguise from a leadership perspective. Not to mention the idea of having a point guard that could be a legitimate threat from three-point land.

Overall, Rothschild's opinion piece takes a short-term view of the Bill Carmody era. Was the season disappointing? Yes. Is the program a disappointment? Hell no. There is a tremendous amount of optimism for next season, one which should produce a postseason berth.
