Thompson suspended

Coach Bill Carmody told WGN Radio that he suspended center Mike Thompson for violation of team rules. The suspension is indefinite for failure to attend classes. Sophomore Vince Scott started in place of Thompson against Penn State on Saturday.

Good to see Carmody take a stand on principle with the team, but a season that started with so much promise and hope for a postseason berth now looks lost.

What will be most remembered from this season? The suspensions of Thompson and freshman Brandon Lee? The lack of success against non-conference opponents? A walk-on playing significant minutes? The regression in the play of T.J. Parker and Mohammed Hachad? It's just hard to say.

So Thompson was suspended for not going to class and Gary Lee was ruled academically ineligible. Is this a sign that the basketball program is admitting students who aren't able to handle the NU academic life in order to win more games? And, if that's the case, why aren't the Cats winning more games?

Good point. Apparently, Thompson is able to handle the academics since he is eligible to play.

All I've heard on Gary Lee is that he was a bit of a project and seemed a likely redshirt before the season. I hope he can get it together on the academics, but this is the type of guy who transfers, unfortunately.

And we have no idea why Brandon Lee was suspended. I hope it isn't skipping class as well.

Seems like there's a discipline problem on the team.
