Regrouping after Illinois

Fresh off a 78-66 loss to Illinois, Northwestern heads to Penn State for a Saturday afternoon game (3 p.m. CT, ESPN2) against a Big Ten cellar-dwellar.

Northwestern coaches host a "Cat chat" tonight at Wolfgang Puck's restaurant in Evanston. Among the questions we have for coach Bill Carmody:

  • Why can't the Cats shoot free throws?
  • Why can't they shoot three-pointers?
  • Is the Princeton offense right for a team that can't shoot?
  • Will the freshmen ever play or are they redshirting?
  • Is Mohammed Hachad on a milk carton?
  • Is an NIT berth a pipe dream?
  • But other than that, we're happy with the season so far.

Obviously, the Cats are struggling from long range, but the percentage isn't that much better this year (.337) than last year (.316). The foul shooting this year (62%) is down a little from last year (67%). Overall, the Cats' averages are pretty close to where they were last year (they're turning the ball over a bit more in 2004005, but they're also rebounding a bit better). I guess what I'm saying here is, the team hasn't had a noticeable improvement from last year to this year. Yes, Young graduating was a big loss, but there's a core group of players back from last year and they were boosted by Thompson's arrival. They should be better than this.
